is this a good price for untested batteries
#1
I've got a local recycler that's willing to sell me used laptop battery packs for $0.91 a pound. That seems like a pretty good price to me, right? About how many cells am I going to get per pound? Also, what's the average rate of good cells for untested packs? Thanks for any help, just discovered this forum a few days ago and I'm already pretty hooked.

What kind of pound do you use? How many grams is that, 453g? A 6-cell battery weighs about 300g I think, the individual cells will be around 45/g46g each on average. So about 9 cells per pound. Seems like a fair price. If you have a lot of smaller batteries, like 3 cells, the ratio will probably be a bit worse, with many 9-cell batteries it will be a bit better.

If the pack isn't completely dead then most cells will probably be reusable, however their capacity will vary wildly from pack to pack. In some packs there will be just one dead set of parallel cells. I found that in my first batch of around 400 or so cells 75 were 1900mAh or above. 20 or 30 were completely dead, another 20 or 30 were really low capacity and the rest was between 1500 and 1900mAh. However, as I said, this can potentially vary wildly and your experience may differ. But that is the risk you have to take when doing this sort of thing. You could be lucky as well and get almost unused cells which have most of their capacity left.

Ask him if you can sort through the packs. Then if you can, select only the higher capacity ones.
6 cell with 60 watthours or 9 cell with 90+ watt hour.
Some of the three cell packs are phenomenal as well.
I have gotten 3400 mah cells out of three cell packs. Probably two of the three cells will be good.

Know your packs going in.

Wait, where are you getting laptop battery packs with 3400mAh cells? I can only get 2900mAh at the max, and usually 2600mAh packs.

My local recycler is trying to charge $4/lb., and a local computer offered $5-10 per battery, depending on cell count. I believe others on here have stated that they have a $.75/lb deal, so $.91/lb doesn't seem unreasonable.

That's a very good price. You can buy from him and sell for 4 times that easily to help fund your project if you wanted to.

My memory is not so good. I checked my spreadsheet and they were 3000 mah cells.  LGABD11865

asus a31n1319  3 cell packs.  Pink wrappers on these cells.

Also saw these in HP 100 wh packs.

I stand corrected.

Wow. That's a very good price. Get them ASAP. That's a great opportunity you've got.
