Hey guys, here I'll be detailing my experiences upgrading the stock battery on the ego2. Stock it's 7S3P. I'm going to be experimenting with 8S4P,9S2P and 9S3P, the first two packs are built and will get road tested this weekend. I'm using the LG MF1 cells from the ebay hoverboard battery auction.

Ok so that was a fun way to blow up the ESC. Everything was good until I applied breaks and then pop and magic smoke. I'm guessing something with the regen breaking went wrong. BMS and battery perfectly fine. Speed was awesome hit 18mph on the 9S, stock goes 13mph

Ok so the IC Iblew up is the TI TPS5450 its a 5A buck converter.

I"m not seeing why breaking, regen or otherwise wouldve affected this chip.
Anybody have any thoughts?

Already blew up 1 replacement lol

can't help sorry but looks like a cool project

Ok so without BMS it works without blowing up the chip, I tried 3 different BMS and all cause the chip to blow up on break. Can't really explain why, stock BMS doesn't seem special.
I'm left with a couple options, bms-less battery(no) BMS on charge & no BMS on discharge (unlikely), new controller(unfortunately yes lol)
It's pricey but a worthy investment I think, my current motor doesn't come anywhere near it limits, it can handle 60A cont,300A peak and my current motor is 15A lol, it can also be doubled up for dual motor

Maybe this is a stupid answer since I don't really know anything about ICs. Your BMS isn't back feeding some weird voltage back into the IC that it doesn't like maybe?

Not that I can tell, I tried 3 different BMS, that IC provides 5V power to the controller board from what I've traced
Once the new controller comes I'll get back to trying to make this one work, thinking of putting a buffer capacitor on the VIN, see what happens

Can you use balance leads instead of bms and charge with imax or similar?

I could but would still need under and over volt protection. It would also require modifying the battery housing which I want to avoid and having a 9s charger in multiple locations or carrying it around isn't worth it, imax is 6s, I could split it 4/5 but that would double charging time

New motor controller arriving this week, in the meantime upgraded wheels to 100mm MBS, drive gear will be upgrade from 36T to 29T, with those 2 changes alone should get extra 4-5mph top speed

They are cool looking wheels, are they solid rubber or similar?

Will this be ok on gravel tracks, or just for made roads, concrete etc?

Solid rubber, great on everything, gravel, sand, chewed up asphalt

New controller finally here

Wow, just wow. New controller with stock motor and gears, stock battery, maxed current to 28A due to 30A fuse, hit 18mph. Can't wait to see what it'll do with upgraded battery. Breaking is so much better now too, 3ft stopping distance at max speed.

New motor,mount and trucks ;)
