UPS and 18650s

However, there are some electronics that does run on AC internally (I know several sound amps do this). So for computers, NAS, Wifi, phone chargers, and the like, modified is fine.
Now, the devices that "need" pure sine, are anything that runs AC motors. So, A/C, fridge, water pump, fans, electric water heater (though, this "may" work fine on mod wave), washer/dryer, basically anything that spins or has spinning parts in it. Because they use induction to turn, then need that pure wave.

When looking at most UPS specs, if they say "Sine Wave", that's pure wave. Otherwise they have to put "Modified" if it's not pure wave.

I was thinking along the same lines. I had second thoughts though when googling for mods for my 1500va RS. I found a number of macbook owners claiming that when on inverter, it caused their power adapters to buzz/hum and heat up.

Since I also own a 1500va APC pure sine wave model, I'll do a quick swap so that the inverter I want to use frequently is the pure sine wave one (just in case there's any issues).

The reason why the power bricks would hum and heat up is because they were built cheap. Now, a AC->DC power brick does use a transformer to bring the power down, then goes through a bridge rectifier. If the components aren't built right, then yes, it'll heat up. Noise occurs because of the rapid jagged edges of a modified sine wave and transformer is reacting to that. However, the transformer is still doing the job and the rectifier is still doing it's job. Not sure why it heats up (someone in electrical engineering could chime in on that one).

But, what I would do, is forget about using charging brings to charge my devices and just have a buck converter for charging my 5v devices. It would handle it a lot better than the power bricks can, and you're not doing double converting with lots of inefficiencies.
