Got some bad news today with regards my solar project : The installer I was planning to use (had 3 quotes from 3 different companies) and I cannot agree on payment terms. He wants 60% upfront and 40% when installation is complete and inspected. I already have the panels I want to use (24 x 315W Canadian Solar) so I've offered 40% upfront, 20% when installation is complete and the remaining balance when system is commisioned. The part which bothers me most is wanting to be fully paid before system is commisioned by utility company. What is your experience with solar installers?

Wow that's bad luck! Stick to your terms its your job. Might have to get out there and get some new qoutes. Show them you're willing to walk away

Here we pay it all when its installed. There are some that do up front but thats only on big installs.

Sounds like I'm going to be doing this DIY style. I'm not interested in grid tie-ing, just to offset my daily average consumption (~50kW/day) with solar. I have 24 panels (CS6X-315P), which I plan on using in 2 strings. If I go the PIP4048MS route, it seems I'm going to need 2 of these in 3S4P configuration. Is there a best way to electrically connect 12 panels in 2 rows of 6? I can thing of 3 ways to do it, can't decide if it matters or not.

Depends on the wire you are using. If you are using 6mm2 i go with 3s2p.
Ie i hook up 2 series of 3 and then go to the inverter. Then i do so for each 6 panales. This due to the rather thing wire of 6mm2. If you want to have more panels going down you need thicker wire.

thats my recomendation.
I jost hooked up 18 panels to my PCM. (Same voltage.

Its 3*3s2p

This would actually work great in my case too! I'm in the process of designing ground mounts out of 2x4 wooden structures that would hold 6 panels in landscape mode (2 rows of 3 panels). I would need 4 to cover the 24 panels and each would cost about $100. I'd have to anchor them down of course but I like that they can be moved as a unit if needed. Anyone has any advice beyond insulating the panels from touching the wood?

Why insolate against touching the wood? I have all mine against wood structure directly and had not problems last 2 years.

Just make sure its rigid if you have strong winds in your area and you will be fine.

Something about galvanic corrosion since pressure treated wood contains copper and other metals... I must have read it on the internet LOL !

Smile Never heard that it could cause issues though. But i stand to be corrected if so Smile

Watch this, just 6 panels can generate this amount of power...
Great idea..
