There is no visual difference between no messages or new messages in the link. It's just a pale gray either way. Could make the "Unread #" a different color (and/or could even make it flash (not red of course))and maybe bold it when it's >0

I don't notice I have messages for awhile until I just happen to "remember" to look in that corner.
 
I agree on this one. Its a common problem. A popup is used on some forum where you just popup a div on top that is static until clicked. Lets see what Mike says.

Nope, have never seen that! I checked my profile and I have the "notify" option enabled, but don't remember ever seeing anything other than the number of unread messages change when I have receive messages.
 
Never seen that, Mike! Looks good, though, maybe the rest of us could enjoy it :p

Yep, that fixed it. I thought it was checked before. I guess I got the two options confused :p
