it does allow customers unprecedented access to the wholesale market, where prices can go as high as $14/kWh (although such events are relatively rare).

This is the key point, having access to those prices means you could decide to go to bed early and export the contents of the powerwall to the grid while the prices are high.
There is a device available that does that sort of thing, you can set what price you want as the trigger, and it operates automatically.

The prices are in 30 minute blocks, and obviously you are limited by how much your inverter can put into the grid.
