BMS balancing per cell?

Hi,

In have a question about balancing 18650 cells.
If I understand correctly, every cell needs to be balanced, right?
Then why are bms'es only having 8 'nodes'?
Then it will be 8 arrays of cells?

One of the main functions of a BMS it to protect the cells in your battery from going above or below their specified voltage and to balance the voltage between every cell so that they are even. To do that it has to monitor every cell in your battery.

The wording might be a bit confusing here. A single 18650 is a cell. Any number of 18650s in parallel is also sometimes called a cell because this parallel pack of cells behaves like a single cell in terms of voltage. It just has a higher capacity but that doesn't matter in this case. And cells aka parallel packs of cells in series make up your battery.

Balancing needs to be done for every cell in series. And your BMS has to be set up for this. You can't use a BMS for 8 cells on a battery consisting of 14 cells. You think about the number of cells you need first and then get a suitable BMS for that number of cells.

BMS start as protection boards for single cells, that is also a simple form of BMS. You can get them in almost every size, matching your battery, and the better ones are modular and adapt to whatever battery you are using.
