Built a super simple Fet-based constant current discharger today. It's bare-bones and awesome. It will test 6 cells at a time (limited by available PWM pins on the Nano- though I am working on a timer altering project to switch-mode the analog pins too- yet another project...blah)

Anyway, it'll be the first video in the series on 18650 testing. It'll be up within a day or so and I'll link it in here. The goal, test more cells with less $$$. I even hand wound resistors..lol, yeah, that cheap!

Could you make the testing units more modular where they use i2c to communicate with the duino? That way you could connect a whole string of them together and only need 4 wires; 2 for the i2c and 2 for the power rails.

I hope so and I am working toward a goal of 8 cells per Nano (maybe more but if I can get 8 cell on each one I'd be really happy.)

So far I have four different models (working discharge/ capacity testers) that I have built. It feels like I have to scarfice a cell for each feature I add. I am trying to build them all with just parts bin leftovers only so its slow going. I don't want to buy little parts and end up spending $30 to built it. If that happens I'd just save the time and buy a pre-made solution.

I guess that's really the main idea, built something that's cheaper than a pre-made solution...but it's really hard nowadays because everything is SO damn cheap anyway... fun learning and reusing all the parts box stuff anyway. Loads of reading and tinkering.



Changed pinMode to turn off a Fet and wanted to make sure it goes totally off and nothing else was bothered by it...working well.

Well, learning and getting the bugs worked out for bin parts is a great way to start. You know a lot more about it than I do (of the electronics especially). I'm still in the infant stage trying to figure out how to suckle Tongue

Anyways, after you get stuff figured out, maybe your version with bought parts won't cost as much in the end. Especially if the overall costs come down per unit as more units are added. Say, you have one master controller, then all the testers are connected to the master. That way you don't need as many parts to do the job. Just something smart enough to flip switches when told to Smile Kinda like Minion!

I envision something like the BatLab guys but without the arrogant,self-defeating intro. Probably for my Master project too, lol. Their product looks rad but right from the start, they insult the very people they intend to market too...advertising flop...but I hope the result of the research is cool. Can't wait to get access to all the "open source" shit they promise.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. You're spot on, customizable segments...and I've also been playing with some software to print out boards super cheap as well, them people can just source the IC and what not from other parts bin stuff.

I hope to upload the first video in the series tomorrow and then I'll film the other ones and upload them the same way. Most the software stuff is straight from 'Example' sketches just twisted to drive Mosfets instead of LEDs. All super easy to learn and cheap to use.

Examples->Analog->AnalogInOutSerial works perfectly to drive the gate of a logic-level Fet. Wire it all the same then battery(+) to Fet Pin 2, resistor & battery (-) toFet Pin3. The pot will control the Amps via PWM through the gate. Use a 1 Ohm resistor and you'll get up 1A easy.

That's video 3 in the series.



Here's the layout. Use any potentiometer but a ten-turn gives better control over Amp range. Even hand wound a 1ohm, high watt resistor.

Hey All,

I received a new order so I have been testing cells for hours on end and replying in other posts but haven't made an videos yet. The good news is I did film a bunch of footage just have to edit and upload it. I did have a couple issues with the Arduino program because I kinda suck at it so expect more analog additions..until I learn more C/C++. If there are some coding wizs here that would like to help me out, id be stoked...having a bit of trouble with the 'while boolean' to turn off fets & counter but still save the mAh reading..trying to keep it simple only makes it harder..lol
