Link as many together as you have cells (eg 7 for 7S)

I love the look of the Batrium and I might end up with that later, but for now I'm building a 7S100P pack and don't trust the typical BMS sold all over eBay for eBikesto keep it balanced (they typically have onlyaround 60ma balance discharge).

$20 USD each inc shipping isn't bad if you don't need them in large numbers. I like that it balances by moving energy from high packs to low packs, so less wasteful than the discharge balancers.
 
though you generally only balance one time. And then it will stay balanced untill weeks, months or even years depending on use. Active balancing in other hand is usefull when you have very mixed packs in terms of capacity and want to be able to use lower end. Still. This only works on low current loads. because it will start balancing in bottom directly. And when you then get up to top again it will balance again. ie moving same energy back and forth when perhaps not even needed.

And since you dont know when it does the balancing or on what criteria it can actually end up wasting more energy than energy dissipating balancing :)
And if you count in that you might go bigger its still waste of money. 7 of them is still 140USD that could have been spent on something that give you more information :)

Neither less above in combination of cell voltage monitoring do work but it also cost.

Have you used this to balance your 18650 packs? I am building 12 volt portable packs at the time.
 
For about the same price, you could build your own bms based off the TI BQ76940 9 to 15-Series Cell Li-Ion and Li-Phosphate Battery Monitor. Or their other one that does lower series or higher series. The chip is relatively cheap and the other parts are cheap too. But instead of balancing 1S with other 1S's, you can do a whole series of cells.
Of course, you have to be comfortable building your own pcb and such to use them.
 
IM(mostly inexperienced)O, I'd prefersimple monitoring. I imagine an arduino nano with 3led lights.If the cells go out of balance over delta turn yellow. If over delta for more than x time turn red.

This stuff is easy hahhehehehe.

I'm not using them yet. I'm probably going to use a set of these when I put my first set of 7 x 100 cells to use.

My preference is for the Batrium balancing and monitoring, but that's more expensive initially. These won't be wasted though. My first 7s battery will be movedto power lights and tools in a shed when I've got more packs done.

I'll probably go with the Batrium down the track when I've got more packs done for house appliances. The 7S with the individual balancers will be its own shed setup.

I bought the versions with inbuilt LEDs. You can see which packs are taking a charge and which ones are giving charge.

While there isn't any data logging or tracking how much current a low pack is pulling, it should help identify which packs to investigate for problems (eg if there's one that's always pulling a charge from the others).

They balance at any point through the charge/discharge cycle, (not top balancing), so I can charge to something like 80% and still keep it all nicely balanced.

I've got 3 connected and testing for about 3 weeks. Working well. The indicator LEDs will consume a little energy, but it's hardly worth worrying about on such big batteries.
